Bringing Care to Ago Tapa Primary Health Care Centre, Mokola

Our journey of outreach reached another highlight when the Damilola Orioke Foundation team visited Ago Tapa Primary Health Care Centre in Mokola. This modest yet vital centre serves as a first point of contact for many families in the area, offering prenatal, delivery and postnatal services to mothers who may not have access to larger hospitals. Walking into the facility, we were met with smiles from staff and the gentle hum of activity that accompanies the care of new life.

Our team arrived with carefully packed items for newborn babies — Pampers, baby wipes, detergents, antiseptic liquid, bathing soap, socks, clothes clips, toiletries and more. Each package was designed to ease the immediate needs of mothers and their little ones. Even though these items seem simple, in a busy community clinic they can mean the difference between stress and relief during the first days of motherhood.

The mothers we met at Ago Tapa were from diverse backgrounds but shared the same glow of joy and exhaustion that comes after childbirth. One young mother shyly accepted her package, saying she had worried about how to afford even the basics for her baby. Another, holding her second child, told us the gift felt like a blessing at just the right time. Seeing these reactions reminded our team that the Foundation’s mission is not only about donations but about standing alongside families at life’s most vulnerable moments.

We also made sure to spend time with the nurses, midwives and matrons who keep the centre running. In many ways, they are unsung heroes, working long hours with limited resources to bring safe deliveries and postnatal care to the community. As part of our visit, we presented tokens of appreciation to the staff, recognising their tireless service. The smiles and warm words we received in return were proof that a simple “thank you” can lift spirits and energise those who give so much of themselves.

Beyond handing over items, our volunteers engaged in conversations with mothers, answering questions about hygiene, breastfeeding and newborn care. Some offered quiet prayers with families who wanted them; others simply congratulated mothers and admired their babies. The room soon filled with laughter, gratitude and a sense of shared humanity.

As we prepared to leave the centre, the atmosphere felt lighter and more hopeful. Babies were bundled up in their blankets, mothers relaxed a little more, and nurses moved through their duties with renewed smiles. For our team, the visit to Ago Tapa was a powerful reminder that even small acts of kindness can ripple outward, creating comfort and dignity in places where they’re needed most.

This fifth visit completed a cycle of outreach that strengthened our commitment at the Damilola Orioke Foundation. Each hospital and clinic we’ve visited has shown us that compassion, given consistently and sincerely, builds stronger communities. Our experience at Ago Tapa Primary Health Care Centre reaffirmed that our mission is more than giving — it’s about creating bonds, inspiring hope and making sure that no mother feels alone as she welcomes new life into the world.
